About the song
The words come from “The Star”, a poem by the English writer Jane Taylor, first published in 1806 in Rhymes for the Nursery.
The melody is the French folk tune “Ah! vous dirai-je, maman”, first printed in 1761. Mozart later wrote twelve piano variations on it, and the same tune carries the Alphabet Song and Baa, Baa, Black Sheep.
